As we can see from the
2012 Kentucky Derby odds posted by the bookmakers, we
already have three clear favorite contenders to win the
first leg of the Triple Crown, but even the top favorite,
Union Rags, is still paying out on great odds, 7/2. For
those knew to wagering, the 7/2 odds will pay $700 for every
$200 bet, something impossible to see on a Kentucky Derby
favorite once the race comes closer to start. Other
contenders pay on even better odds, thus we remind our
readers once again the importance of locking in the Derby
betting odds as early as possible to secure the best return
of the bet.
We will also preview
the top Kentucky Derby contenders for the 2012 race in depth
on our upcoming articles, as well as look at the odds of
winning not only the Kentucky Derby by the Triple Crown, as
well. Some great odds and prop bets there, as well. But
let's quickly look at the top 2 Kentucky Derby 2012
contenders.
Starting with the
ultimate favorite, Union Rags, which pays out on 7/2 odds to
win the Kentucky Derby, the closes second paying double that
price. The latest race of the horse was on March 31st, when
Union Rags finished 3rd in the Florida Derby, a Grade I 1
1/8 mile race at Gulfstream Park. Only five days prior Union
Rags won the Fountain of Youth at the same racecourse and
placed second at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November.
Jockey is the two time Eclipse champion Julien Leparoux and
the trainer Michael Matz already has a Kentucky Derby
winner, Barbaro in 2006, and according to the odds he is on
his way to grab a trophy for the 2012 as well.
Competition to Union
Rags, according to the sportsbooks, will come mainly from
Gemologist, a 7/1 odds holder at Bovada to win the 2012
Kentucky Derby. Not much racing history for Gemologist -
just won the Wood Memorial at the Aqueduct on April 7th and
has one other victory, winning the Kentucky Jockey Club last
November at Churchill Downs. But with Todd Pletcher as its
trainer, Gemologist certainly has the chance to take on the
rest for the 138th Kentucky Derby. Gemologist jockey will be
Javier Castellano, who has victories at the Breeders' Cup
and the Preakness under his belt.
